Premier Women Results Feb 6, 2010
Results and highlights from Burnaby vs United
The Premier Women’s League has taken same twists and turns over the years. This year, we start the second half with the pre-season continuing until the end of February. The games that actually count for playoff seedings don’t start until March making February another month to work the kinks out prior to the main event.
All that being said, it was game on, and Saturday February 6th saw Burnaby Lake visiting Hume Park to take on United on a day made for rugby.
Burnaby exerted pressure from the opening kick off, denying United the gainline, keeping them hemmed inside the 22. Five minutes of relentless pressure eventually lead to the first of Mel Miyazaki’s 2 tries, as Mel spotted a gap and scooted under the posts. Anna Schnell supplying the conversion.
Burnaby kept the pressure on forcing United to eventually resort to a kicking game to gain territory. Burnaby’s back three countered well, with one particular offering being sent by United to Burnaby’s left wing Erin Jang. Erin gratefully accepted the kick and promptly ran the ball 50 metres down the left wing to set up Anna Schnell for a try.
A fumble off the ensuing kick off saw United take the initiative, hemming Burnaby inside their 22. Unlike the first quarter, where Burnaby was able to starve United of the ball, United successfully maintained possession allowing Stevie Schnoor to eventually cross the line for a try. The try was converted, and the challenge had been laid down. Give United an opportunity and possession and they would execute.
Burnaby responded. The forwards stepped up a gear, with fierce tacking and physicality at the breakdown being the order of the day. United found themselves going backwards repeatedly at the set piece, allowing the Burnaby back row to become a sight that the United midfield became very tired of seeing.
Leveraging the pressure and the platform provided by the pack, the Burnaby halfbacks and midfield asserted themselves for the remainder of the match. Nine tries would be tallied on the day with four conversions being added on.
Other highlights:
The tight five dominating United in the scrums setting the stage for what would unfold
Birthday girl Devon Luca scoring two tries, the first try rounding out good work by Dr Maria Gallo to draw in the defense.
Fullback Becky Querido fielding a clearance kick from the United fullback and then slotting an inch perfect kick back to where the fullback was. Becky followed up her own kick causing mayhem in the United in-goal, resulting in a 5 metre scrum that resulted in a Burnaby try
Stevie Schnoor running into the Great Wall of China (Erin Jang), and being brought to a complete stop, at which point Erin promptly finished off the tackle
